Corporate Fact Sheet

The Company

The Old Dog Cookie Company (ODCC) is a Maine business offering natural, organic and herbal based dog treats. Our treats are oven baked with a crunchy texture and delicious taste. The company was founded in 1996 after extensive researching and testing our products within the veterinary community. ODCC focuses on the aging canine population providing products to help relieve the discomforts associated with aging pets-arthritis, diabetes and obesity. Today, the ODCC offers Arthritis Relief and Diabetic Dog Treats. Each recipe is carefully formulated with premium natural and organic ingredients known to improve the health of a dog.

The company started after the founder’s 8 year-old black lab, Jetty, developed signs of arthritis. The owner noticed that the ingredients listed on most dog treats included chemicals, additives and other ingredients that couldn’t be good for their dog!  She wanted to use only healthy ingredients that consumers knew to be nutritious.  The company’s mission is to provide healthy dog cookies combining the gentle healing properties of herbs with foods rich in vitamins and minerals.  As a result, ODCC products are good enough for people but made for your dog!

ODCC sells to pet owners who select their pet foods the way they shop for their own foods--based on nutrition and wholesome ingredients. ODCC products are sold through the internet.

The Products

Our Arthritis Relief and Diabetic Dog Treats are made with natural ingredients and herbs known to promote better health and wellness in adult dogs. Herbs have been used for centuries to treat injury and disease in animals. The therapeutic value of plants is well documented. Herbs are highly nutritious, providing essential vitamins, minerals and other nutrients to a dog’s diet. Key ingredients for the Arthritis Relief Treats are alfalfa, unsweetened applesauce, rolled oats, honey, raspberry leaves, brewers yeast, kelp and stone ground whole wheat flour. These ingredients help to regenerate bone and connective tissue, support good adrenal function and increase the production of cortisone helping a dog maintain optimal joint function and relieve stiffness. Our cookies also contain vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fiber to promote a healthy skin and coat.

Our Diabetic Treat was introduced after a friend at Cornell Veterinarian school  commented that there were no diabetic treats available for his K-9 patients. Our Diabetic Treats aid the dog’s immune system to regulate blood sugar allowing a dog to better manage insulin requirements.  This product has been a significant help to our customers and has produced a very loyal following. Our Diabetic Treat is formulated with natural ingredients, with many organic( brewers yeast, garlic, rolled oats, stone ground whole wheat flour, unsweetened applesauce, kelp, squash, dandelion root) all known to regulate blood sugar levels to help a dog better manage its insulin requirements.

Founder

Junellen (Jef) Bucknam has spent her entire life around animals including many special family pets.  Prior to starting the Old Dog Cookie Company, Bucknam spent 20 years in the competitive horse world working with trainers, massage therapists and veterinarians to improve the heath and performance of her equines. This coupled with her skills as an avid gardener and a special interest in medicinal herbs provided the inspiration for ODCC.  She brought her interest in nutrition to ODCC by developing and Arthritis Relief Cookie for her family dog. She did extensive research consulting with veterinarians before selecting each ingredient used in ODCC products. Her veterinarian was so impressed with the results that he started carrying them in his practice and ODCC was started.
